Privacy Policy

Booktastic is an audiobook player for iPhone and Apple Watch, made by Deep Owl Labs. We designed it to keep your data on your own devices.

The short version

Booktastic does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data. There are no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party accounts. The developer has no servers that receive your data.

What stays on your device / in your iCloud

  • Your library and listening progress (titles, authors, chapters, bookmarks, position, and the audio files you add) are stored on your device and, if you enable iCloud, in your own private iCloud account. Apple iCloud handles this sync; the developer cannot see it.
  • Audiobook files come from folders you choose, including iCloud Drive. The app accesses them only to play, organize, and — at your request — transcribe them.
  • Transcriptions and AI chapter names are generated on your device using Apple's on-device Speech framework. The audio and resulting text are not sent to the developer.

Information used by Apple, not by us

Some features rely on Apple services governed by Apple's Privacy Policy:

  • iCloud syncs your library and progress across your devices (only if you enable it).
  • Speech recognition runs on-device where supported.
  • In-app tips (the optional Tip Jar) are processed by Apple's App Store. We receive no payment details — only Apple's confirmation that a tip completed. Tips are optional and unlock no features.
  • Book metadata (covers, authors, descriptions) is looked up via the Apple iTunes Search API over HTTPS. These requests contain only the search terms needed to find a book and are sent to Apple, not to the developer.

Permissions the app may request

  • Speech Recognition / Microphone — for voice search and on-device transcription of your audiobooks.
  • Photo Library (add only) — to save clips and quote cards you choose to export.
  • Apple Watch — to sync your library and play downloaded books on your watch.

You can change or revoke these in Settings → Privacy & Security at any time.

Diagnostic logs

If you tap Settings → Diagnostics → Export Diagnostic Log, the app creates a text file of recent in-app activity to help diagnose problems. To diagnose a specific book it may include book titles and file names from your library. It contains no account credentials, contacts, or location. The file is created only when you tap Export and is shared only with whoever you choose. Please review it before sharing.

Children

Booktastic does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
